So far I've some basic components gathered:
* A DLP projector.
* Two sheets of 11"x14" acrylic (thanks Home Depot!)
* 4 flat-head screws & bolts (#8-32 x 3/8") for holding the acrylic together.
* Drill & bit. (Drill da holes in the acrylic)
* Webcam (You getting all of this?)
* Velum sheet(s) (thanks Martha Stewart!)
* 4 IR LED's, 16mW min. 940nm, 45 degrees (enlighten me.)
Of note: acrylic is fragile.. drill holes into it sloooowly.

My Project ... Begins!
Ok. So, after seeing the amazing MS Surface demonstration:
und:
I was thrilled to find that it isn't anything (too) new. Furthermore, I was very excited to see that it wasn't exactly rocket-science to construct a DYI version!
I will attempt to catalog my progress for this little project to help inform others and to (re-)inform myself two years from now when I wonder how I did it!
Annnndddd... we're off!
